Iran views potential attack against Israel as 'legitimate defense': 'Defense is a necessity'

Tehran's Permanent Mission to the United Nations (UN) and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian have threatened Israel over the attack on Iran's consulate building in the Syrian capital, Damascus.

Viewing a potential attack against Israel as "legitimate defense," Tehran stated that Tel Aviv would be punished.

"IRAN WOULD NOT HAVE BEEN FORCED TO PUNISH THIS ROGUE REGIME..."

In a message shared on the social media platform X, Iran's Permanent Mission to the UN stated, "Had the UN Security Council condemned the Zionist regime's reprehensible attack on our diplomatic facility in Damascus and brought the perpetrators to justice, Iran would not have been forced to punish this rogue regime."

Russia's Permanent Representative to the UN, Vassily Nebenzia, also noted in his remarks to reporters that they were working to have the UN Security Council issue a statement regarding the attack.

Nebenzia said that the UN Security Council statement was blocked by their "Anglo-Saxon" counterparts.

"LEGITIMATE DEFENSE TO PUNISH"

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian noted that his country considers a potential retaliation against Israel, which struck its consulate in Damascus, as "legitimate defense to punish the aggressor" that violated the immunity of diplomatic missions and international law.

According to a written statement from the Iranian Foreign Ministry, Amir-Abdollahian rejected Berlin's call for maximum restraint against Israel during a phone call with German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock.

"GERMANY HAS NOT REMAINED NEUTRAL"

Stating that the only solution to the problems is to stop Israel's attacks in Gaza, Amir-Abdollahian said, "The reason for the failure of Germany's efforts to achieve a ceasefire in Gaza should be sought in the fact that Germany has not remained neutral while this genocide continues."

Amir-Abdollahian continued his remarks as follows:

"In cases where the Israeli regime completely violates international law, the Vienna Convention, and the immunity of individuals and diplomatic premises, legitimate defense is a necessity for the purpose of punishing the aggressor."
