Iranian students seek help from YÖK: We cannot pay
The Council of Higher Education (YÖK) has requested in a circular sent to universities that Iranian students be granted a reasonable period to pay their tuition fees due to problems with internet and communication infrastructure in their home country.
In a letter sent by YÖK to state and foundation universities, it was stated: "Applications have been submitted to us by Iranian students continuing their education at higher education institutions in our country, stating that they cannot establish healthy communication with their families due to serious disruptions in the internet and communication infrastructure recently experienced in Iran, and for this reason, they cannot transfer money from abroad and cannot pay their tuition fees within the specified time.
As is known, Article 46, paragraph (g) of Law No. 2547 states: 'Student contribution shares and tuition fees are paid at the beginning of the relevant semester. Those who do not pay the contribution share or tuition fee within the period and whose excuses are not accepted by the board of directors of the relevant higher education institution cannot register for that semester and cannot benefit from student rights.'
However, it is assessed that the inability of the students in question to pay their tuition fees within the specified time stems from technical and communication problems occurring nationwide that developed outside of their own will.
In this context, I kindly request your information regarding the necessity of allowing Iranian students to pay their tuition fees during the spring semester and ensuring that a reasonable period, including installment options, is provided."
