Is public transport free on May 19? Statement from Minister Uraloğlu
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu announced that Marmaray, Başkentray, İZBAN, the Sirkeci-Kazlıçeşme Rail System Line, and the Gayrettepe-Istanbul Airport-Arnavutköy Metro Line will provide free service on May 19, Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day.
Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Abdulkadir Uraloğlu stated that, in accordance with the decision published in the Official Gazette on April 29 with the signature of AKP President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Marmaray, Başkentray, İZBAN, the Sirkeci-Kazlıçeşme rail system line, and the Gayrettepe-Istanbul Airport-Arnavutköy Metro Line under the Ministry will provide free service on May 19, Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day.
Underlining that railways are one of Turkey's most important modes of transport, Minister Uraloğlu provided information that a very significant portion of the youth, who are the future of the country, prefer to travel by train.
Noting that young people make up 19.8 percent of those traveling by High-Speed Train, Uraloğlu said,
“We offer our youth a 15 percent discount and various discounted subscription options on our High-Speed Trains, main line, and regional trains operated by TCDD Taşımacılık. Our youth show great interest in our tourist trains as well as our High-Speed Trains. It is very important that our youth, to whom we will entrust the future of our country, grow up with a love for railways.”
