Is the earthquake in the Marmara a precursor to the major earthquake? Important statement from Ahmet Ercan
Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan evaluated the 4.1 magnitude earthquake that occurred near Balıkesir in the Sea of Marmara, stating, "The small M4.1 earthquake shows that the region is under stress. However, it does not indicate that the expected major earthquake is approaching or that these are its footsteps."
AFAD reported that a 4.1 magnitude earthquake occurred off the coast of Balıkesir in the Sea of Marmara yesterday evening (July 19) at 22:26.
While the tremor was recorded at a depth of 7.18 km, it brought to mind the potential major Istanbul earthquake.
Prof. Dr. Ahmet Ercan made a statement regarding the matter on his social media account.
Ercan's statement is as follows:
"The small M4.1 earthquake that occurred at a depth of 4.2 km on the Tekirdağ branch of the North Anatolian Fault, northwest of Marmara Island, on July 19 at 22:26, shows that the region is under stress. However, it does not indicate that the expected major earthquake is approaching or that these are its footsteps. There is no cause for concern."
