ISIG report reveals: 2,664 young workers died in 'work-related murders' in 12 years

Publishing the Young Workers Work-Related Murders Report, ISIG noted that at least 2,664 young workers have lost their lives in work-related murders over the last 12 years. ISIG stated that while young people should be living a healthy and safe life, receiving an education, and working, they are instead forced to struggle with problems such as poverty, precarious labor, violence, and a lack of future prospects.

ISIG argued that the policies implemented during the AKP era have turned young people into cheap labor and darkened their futures. In its statement, ISIG expressed that the agricultural, industrial, educational, and social policies applied, particularly during the AKP era, have stripped young people of their future and turned them into cheap labor for capital.

The report draws attention to the issue of child labor by referencing the statement made by AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan: 'In 2023, the fertility rate in our country fell to 1.51. This situation is alarming and constitutes an existential threat for Turkey.'

HUNGER THRESHOLD IS 22 THOUSAND 131 LIRA

ISIG also shared data regarding the economic and social problems of young people. According to Türk-İş's January 2025 Hunger-Poverty Survey, the hunger threshold for a family of four was determined to be 22 thousand 131 lira, while the poverty threshold was set at 72 thousand 88 lira.

In BİSAM's January 2025 Period Report, the hunger threshold for a family of four was announced as 22 thousand 75 lira, and the poverty threshold as 76 thousand 358 lira. According to Endeksa's January 2025 Housing Value Report, the average rent in Turkey was recorded as 20 thousand 542 lira.

According to the statement by DİSK-Ar, the narrow-defined unemployment rate among youth in the fourth quarter of 2024 was announced as 15.7 percent. The broad-defined unemployment rate for the youth population aged 15-24 was calculated at 37.3 percent. Broad-defined youth female unemployment reached 46.7 percent.

1 IN EVERY 3 YOUNG PEOPLE IS UNEMPLOYED

According to OECD data, in 2024, one in every 3 young people (31.1 percent) aged 18-24 was neither in education nor in employment. This rate was announced as 13.7 percent on average for OECD countries.

The report emphasized that the future of young people is in danger, using the following expressions:

'Our youth, whom we call our future, are trapped in a cycle of poverty, precarious labor, violence, lack of future prospects, and work-related murders, while they should be living a healthy and safe life, studying, and working.'

ISIG emphasized that urgent steps must be taken to solve the problems faced by young workers. The report called for an end to precarious working conditions, the prevention of work-related murders, and the expansion of educational and employment opportunities for young people. ISIG underscored that social and economic policies must be reviewed to protect the future of young people.
