Istanbul Bar Association President Kaboğlu makes a call after visiting Dedetaş: It is a mandate of the Constitution

Kaboğlu and the bar's board of directors visited Üsküdar Mayor Sinem Dedetaş, who is being held at the Tekirdağ Çorlu Karatepe Prison.

Making a statement after the visit, Kaboğlu said, "The procedures and actions to which the Üsküdar Mayor has been subjected from the very beginning essentially show that a new criminal narrative is being constructed. We cannot turn a blind eye to this. Sinem Dedetaş's place is not the Karatepe penal and detention facility. Her place is the Üsküdar Municipality. She must continue her duties as Mayor. This is a mandate of our Constitution."

“We are fulfilling our duty to protect the rule of law and human rights"

Kaboğlu stated the following:

"As the Istanbul Bar Association board, we visited Üsküdar Mayor Sinem Dedetaş. As is known, Dedetaş was detained in a dawn operation after her home was raided at six in the morning. She was then held for 3 days both at the police station and at the courthouse.

Later, while she was about to be placed in the Bakırköy Women's Prison, she was brought to Çorlu after midnight and placed in her cell here on Saturday morning. As the Istanbul Bar Association, we are fulfilling our duty to protect the rule of law and human rights.

In this respect, all procedures must be carried out in accordance with the Constitution. People can be tried regardless of who they are, but this must be done within the framework of respect for the Constitution.

However, the procedures and actions to which the Üsküdar Mayor has been subjected from the very beginning essentially show that a new criminal narrative is being constructed. We cannot turn a blind eye to this. We are obligated to monitor the constitutional guarantees of individuals in order to protect the rule of law, the democratic state, and the democratic state of law in Turkey. We did that here today. We will continue to monitor it closely. Sinem Dedetaş's place is not the Karatepe penal and detention facility. Her place is the Üsküdar Municipality. She must continue her duties as Mayor. This is a mandate of our Constitution."
