Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office launches investigation into Israel

The Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an ex officio investigation into the Israeli military's attack on the Global Sumud Flotilla, which set sail to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza.

Global Sumud Flotilla Turkey officials announced that the Israeli military, which carried out the attack in international waters more than 600 miles from Gaza and a few miles off Greek territorial waters, has detained 20 Turkish citizens who were on the flotilla.

The Global Sumud Flotilla 2026 Spring Mission, which aims to break Israel's blockade of Gaza and deliver vital humanitarian aid, set sail into the Mediterranean from Barcelona, Spain, on April 12.

While the flotilla set off again on April 26 with participants from the Italian island of Sicily, the Israeli military carried out an illegal intervention in international waters off the coast of Crete on the night of April 29, attacking the boats carrying the activists.

According to information provided by flotilla officials, there are 345 participants from 39 different countries on the boats, including Turkish citizens.

No reliable information is available regarding the fate of the civilians in the attack, which took place 600 nautical miles from Gaza and a few nautical miles off Greek territorial waters.

Global Sumud Flotilla officials reported that the Israeli military seized 21 boats in the attack, 17 surviving boats entered Greek territorial waters, and 14 boats are currently sailing toward Greek territorial waters.
