Istanbul Governor's Office announces: 575 people detained on May 1st

The Istanbul Governor's Office granted permission for celebrations to be held at Kadıköy Pier Square and Kartal Square as part of the May 1st Labor and Solidarity Day.

The Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions of Turkey (DİSK), the Confederation of Public Employees' Trade Unions (KESK), the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB), and the Turkish Medical Association (TTB) also decided to hold celebrations at Kadıköy Pier Square.

On the other hand, some groups wanted to march to Taksim.

Clashes occurred between police and groups on Barbaros Boulevard in Beşiktaş and in Mecidiyeköy in Şişli, and a large number of people were detained.

STATEMENT FROM THE GOVERNOR'S OFFICE

In the statement made by the Istanbul Governor's Office regarding the matter, it was stated: "May 1st Labor and Solidarity Day was celebrated with enthusiasm at the rallies held at Kadıköy Pier Square and Kartal Square with the permission granted by our Governor's Office.

We thank all the unions, NGOs, and laborers who celebrated this special day properly and with enthusiasm by complying with the decisions taken; furthermore, we thank our police who work day and night for the security of our city and the peace and welfare of our citizens.

The measures that needed to be taken for the May 1st Labor and Solidarity Day to be spent in peace in our city had been shared with the public previously.

Some marginal groups, disregarding the precautionary measures taken, have confronted our police units on this May 1st, just as they do every year.

Necessary interventions were carried out against these groups by the relevant units of our Istanbul Police Department. As of 18:00, 575 people have been detained in the interventions carried out against these marginal groups who did not comply with the precautionary measures taken. The processing of the detained individuals is ongoing at police units."
