Istanbul Governor's Office statement on 'Israel protest': 1 dead, 63 injured

A statement has been issued by the Istanbul Governor's Office regarding the Israel protests.

The statement included the following remarks:

"On Tuesday, 17.10.2023, a group of our citizens who gathered in front of the Israeli Consulate General in Istanbul to protest Israel's bombardment of civilians in Gaza attempted to enter the consulate building and attacked our security forces, surrounding buildings, and the consulate with stones, sticks, torches, and fireworks. Our security forces intervened to prevent the group from entering the consulate building in order to avoid irreparable incidents. Furthermore, 5 individuals identified as having breached police barriers and attacked our security forces have been detained.

During the protest, one of our citizens, Eshabil Tüfekçi, born in 1958, who was present at the scene, suffered a heart attack and was taken to the hospital. Despite all interventions, he could not be saved and lost his life. In the incidents, a total of 63 citizens, 43 of whom were police officers, were also injured.

Being forced to make this intervention during this time when our hearts are bleeding has also deeply wounded us. We kindly request our citizens, who wish to react to Israel's bombardments against civilians—which resemble terrorist attacks—to refrain from actions that may lead to irreparable consequences while expressing their reactions."

SAADET PARTY MEMBER TÜFEKÇİ'S FATHER HAS DIED

It has been learned from the statement made by the Governor's Office that the person who lost his life was Eshabil Tüfekçi, the father of Saadet Party Istanbul Provincial Deputy Chairman Nuri Tüfekçi, who was participating in the protest in Istanbul.
