It had become a grave for 19 people: Investigation permit granted for public officials in the Fazilet Apartment case

A new development has occurred regarding the case of the Fazilet Apartment in Kahramanmaraş, which collapsed during the earthquakes on February 6, 2023, resulting in the loss of 19 lives. An investigation permit has been granted for 10 public officials who were working at the Kahramanmaraş Municipality at the time of the earthquake. The appeal filed by the public officials against the investigation permit decision was rejected. 

The Kahramanmaraş Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, within the framework of the report prepared by the expert committee as part of the investigation, identified "fault" in the individuals responsible for the building control unit at the Kahramanmaraş Municipality at the time and requested an investigation permit for these individuals on charges of "causing death and injury by negligence" and "misconduct in office."

The Kahramanmaraş Governorship had granted an investigation permit for the deputy mayors Cuma Tahiroğlu, Mehmet Sezal, and Mehmet Gedemenli, zoning affairs managers Metin Hurşitoğlu and Fahri Yiğitoğlu, map engineer Zeynel Abidin Şerefoğlu, architects Veli Çiftaslan, Mehmet Dişçeken, and Hacı Mehmet Güner, and mechanical engineer Hülya Çelik, who were employed at the Kahramanmaraş Municipality at the time of the incident.

'I WANT THEM TO BE TRIED'

Gülay Sevilmiş Kahveci, who lost her mother, older sister, and younger sister in the Fazilet Apartment, made the following statement regarding the process:

"In our long-standing struggle for justice, public officials certainly had a great responsibility as well. The investigation permit granted by the Kahramanmaraş Governorship regarding the public officials and the approval of this decision by the Gaziantep Regional Administrative Court have increased our faith in justice. I want everyone who had a fault in the collapse of the building to be tried."
