İYİ Party sets condition for AKP regarding 'new constitution'!
Speaking on the new constitution debates on the agenda, İYİ Party sources stated that they would not look favorably upon any constitution that does not include a return to the 'parliamentary system'.
Following the March 31 Local Elections, AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, who met with CHP leader Özgür Özel, had signaled a 'period of softening' in politics and announced that he would pay a return visit to the CHP as soon as possible.
Stating that he would visit Özel after June 9, Erdoğan had responded to a question regarding whether he would meet with Müsavat Dervişoğlu, who was elected as the Chairman of the İYİ Party, by saying, "There is no reason for us not to meet."
Following this statement by Erdoğan, an AKP delegation paid a 'congratulatory' visit to İYİ Party leader Dervişoğlu at the Turkish Grand National Assembly (TBMM) yesterday.
Making a statement after the meeting, Dervişoğlu responded to a journalist's question, "Was there a situation regarding setting an appointment for a meeting with the President?" by saying, "We did not talk about that at all. Our President said yesterday, 'There is no reason for us not to meet,' but we did not talk about that at all today."
"OUR DOOR IS OPEN TO A MEETING"
According to the report by Cumhuriyet, İYİ Party sources noted that there was no request for a meeting from either side regarding a meeting between Erdoğan and Dervişoğlu. Stating that they would look favorably upon a meeting if a request were made, party members indicated that the meeting would take place within the framework of a "courtesy visit". Stating that the İYİ Party's stance on the constitution is clear, party officials expressed that saying "Yes" to a formula that would strengthen the presidential government system would not be in line with the party's spirit. Sources noted that the İYİ Party would not look favorably upon any constitution that does not include a return to the "parliamentary system".
