İZSU General Manager referred to court with request for arrest

As part of the investigation conducted by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office into the deaths of Özge Ceren Deniz (23) and İnanç Öktemay (44), who were electrocuted after stepping into a puddle during a downpour in the Alsancak neighborhood of İzmir's Konak district on July 12, 10 suspects, including İZSU General Manager Gürkan Erdoğan and GDZ Elektrik Distribution General Manager Uğur Yüksel, were referred to the İzmir Courthouse after their statements were taken. One suspect apprehended in Ordu provided their statement via SEGBİS.

REFERRED FOR ARREST

Out of the 11 people who gave statements to the prosecutor for 6 hours, 9 were referred to the Duty Criminal Court of Peace with a request for arrest.

According to the report by Yusuf Körükmez from Cumhuriyet, it was learned that İZSU General Manager Gürkan Erdoğan was among those for whom an arrest was requested.

TWO SUSPECTS PLACED UNDER HOUSE ARREST

Of the 11 suspects detained regarding the deaths of 2 people who were electrocuted while trying to take shelter from a downpour in İzmir's Konak district, 2 were placed under house arrest, while the others were released.

As part of the investigation carried out by the İzmir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, 10 suspects, including İZSU General Manager Gürkan Erdoğan, former İZSU General Manager Ali Hıdır Köseoğlu, and GDZ Elektrik Distribution General Manager Uğur Yüksel, who were detained yesterday following the preparation of an expert report on the incident, were re-questioned by the court after their statements at the public prosecutor's office.

The court decided to release 8 of these individuals, including Erdoğan, Köseoğlu, and Yüksel, on the condition of a travel ban, while placing 2 under house arrest.

Within the scope of the investigation, 1 person who was caught in Ordu and gave a statement via the Audio and Visual Information System (SEGBİS) was also released by the prosecutor's office.

Özge Ceren Deniz and İnanç Öktemay, who stepped into a puddle during a downpour in the Konak district on July 12, had lost their lives after being electrocuted.

As part of the investigation into the incident, 48 out of 51 suspects for whom detention warrants were issued were apprehended. 14 of these individuals were arrested.

REACTION FROM CHP'S ASLANOĞLU

CHP İzmir Provincial Chair Şenol Aslanoğlu, who came to the courthouse, said, “We are against the politicization of this process. The General Manager of the state would be invited in accordance with procedure and state decorum, would come to the prosecutor's office, and provide their information. Being detained and spending the night in a police station is a perception game. Of course, our friends' information will be sought, but we express that we are against the politicization of this matter.

There are statements from citizens and shopkeepers living in the region. They are also in the statements held by the prosecutor's office. There are dozens of notifications made to the registered phones of both the Metropolitan Municipality and Gediz Elektrik. There are complaints that there was illegal electricity in the region after January and that stray animals were being harmed. There is information that despite it being known that there was an electrical leak there, no intervention could be made.”

Former İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer also came to the courthouse to support the families of the suspects.

Previously, 14 out of 30 people detained as part of the investigation had been arrested.
