Moriwaki met with business people at a hotel in the city during a seminar titled "Awareness and Consciousness Against Earthquakes" organized by a private company.
Speaking to journalists there, Moriwaki said that one must be prepared for a potential earthquake in Istanbul.
Stating that areas with soft soil are more affected by severe earthquakes, Moriwaki said, "The former Atatürk Airport, Ataköy, Küçükçekmece, Avcılar, and Büyükçekmece have very soft soil. We must prioritize work in areas with soft soil.
Hard ground is located on both sides of the Bosphorus. In hard ground, the earthquake travels quickly and does not cause as much wave impact, but if it is soft, the earthquake travels slowly and the wave impact is much greater. In the 1999 Gölcük earthquake, there were not many problems in Istanbul, but buildings collapsed in Avcılar. This is because the soil there is very soft," he said.
Moriwaki added that in the February 6 earthquakes centered in Kahramanmaraş, damage also occurred mostly in regions with soft soil.
