Japanese earthquake expert Moriwaki: The real risk is on the plains side

Participating in a book fair held in Manisa, Japanese earthquake expert, senior architect, and civil engineer Yoshinori Moriwaki said, "A new earthquake occurred in Manisa in 2020. Therefore, I do not expect a major earthquake immediately. However, if an earthquake occurs in İzmir, it could have an impact here as well. There is no major problem on the mountain side of Manisa. The real risk is on the plains side and in areas with soft soil."

Japanese earthquake expert Moriwaki: The real risk is on the plains side

Participating in a talk program at the 8th Manisa Book Fair, Japanese earthquake expert Moriwaki met with students and shared important information regarding earthquake awareness.

Moriwaki, who also gifted books to students at the end of the program, later made statements to members of the press. Pointing out that there are numerous small and thin fault lines in the Aegean Region, Moriwaki said, "Earthquakes can occur frequently in the Aegean. In 2020, earthquakes were experienced in Manisa, Muğla, and İzmir. Now, seismic activity continues."

Touching upon the earthquake that occurred in Balıkesir, Moriwaki stated that this earthquake was not caused by a fault line, noting, "The earthquake in Balıkesir is not a fault line earthquake; it is an earthquake related to the movement of magma.

Similar earthquakes occur every day on the Greek island of Santorini. The one in Balıkesir is that type of earthquake," he expressed.

Continuing his assessment regarding Manisa, Moriwaki said, "A new earthquake occurred in Manisa in 2020. Therefore, I do not expect a major earthquake immediately. However, if an earthquake occurs in İzmir, it could have an impact here as well. There is no major problem on the mountain side of Manisa. The real risk is on the plains side and in areas with soft soil."
