Japanese earthquake expert reveals region with low risk
The issue of earthquakes, which is at the forefront of Turkey's natural disaster problems, was discussed in all its dimensions by Japanese Earthquake Expert Yoshinori Moriwaki at a conference titled "Living with Earthquakes." Moriwaki announced the region in Turkey that is safe in terms of earthquakes.
Alanya Alaaddin Keykubat University (ALKÜ) continues to organize informative seminars and conferences regarding disasters.
The opening speech of the program was delivered by Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Mehmet Akın. Akın expressed his condolences to the Japanese people for those who lost their lives in the 7.6 magnitude earthquake and the plane crash that occurred in Japan recently.
Stating that they were happy to host Earthquake Expert Yoshinori Moriwaki on such an important topic as earthquakes, Akın said, “Living with earthquakes is a reality that we unfortunately encounter frequently in our country.
Dealing with such natural disasters is not just a topic, but also a matter of supporting each other as a society and acting consciously. Each of us has responsibilities to fulfill in order to cope with natural disasters and earthquakes.

As an educated, conscious, and prepared society, we can overcome these difficult situations and build a safer future. Let us not forget that every individual's contribution is important in the fight against natural disasters,” he said.
"IF HE MAKES A MISTAKE, HE KILLS THOUSANDS"
Stating that Turkey is an earthquake country and warning that everyone should be prepared for this situation, Moriwaki said, “In order to minimize the impact of earthquakes in Turkey, structures must be solid, and earthquake suitability must be the priority when planning urbanization.
When a doctor makes a mistake during surgery, he may cause the death of one person, but when a civil engineer makes a mistake or an error, he causes the death of dozens or even thousands of people. It is not the earthquake that kills, but the building,” he said.
“ALANYA IS SAFE"
In the continuation of his speech, Moriwaki stated that the earthquake risk in the Antalya-Alanya region is low and that Alanya is a safe region in terms of earthquakes.
Moriwaki also underlined that in the event of an earthquake of 7 or higher that could occur in the Mediterranean, there could be a tsunami wave reaching a maximum of 3 meters.
