Journalist Fatih Altaylı detained: Reactions pour in from legal experts and professional organizations
Journalist Fatih Altaylı was detained in the morning by a seven-person police team that arrived at his home. No information was provided regarding the reason for the detention or where he was being taken. The detention order came immediately after a threatening post made on social media by Oktay Saral, one of President Erdoğan’s chief advisors.
Oktay Saral had explicitly targeted Altaylı in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account in the morning, using the phrase "the water is heating up for you."
Following this post by Saral, the detention of Altaylı has become a new example of the government's policy of pressure on journalists.
Reactions to the detention of Fatih Altaylı were not long in coming.
Union of Turkish Bar Associations President Erinç Sağkan, in a written statement, stated that the detention order applied to Altaylı was unlawful and used the following expressions:
"The detention order unlawfully applied to Fatih Altaylı is not just an attempt to silence a journalist, but an open threat to the public's right to receive information."
