Journalist Furkan Karabay detained again
It has been learned that journalist Furkan Karabay was detained as part of an investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality on charges of "publicly disseminating misleading information."
Announcing the development on social media, lawyer Enes Ermaner stated that Karabay was detained as part of an investigation into the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality on charges of "publicly disseminating misleading information."
Ermaner's post is as follows:
"Journalist Furkan Karabay has just been detained as part of the IMM investigation on charges of publicly disseminating misleading information in accordance with Article 217/A of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK)."
He had been imprisoned for 201 days
Journalist Furkan Karabay was detained in a dawn operation on May 15, 2025, due to his statements and social media posts. Referred to the prosecutor's office on charges of "targeting individuals involved in the fight against terrorism" and "insulting the President," Karabay was arrested by the Criminal Judgeship of Peace.
Karabay appeared before a judge for the first time on December 2, 2025, in a trial where he faced 6 to 15 years in prison on charges of "insulting the President," "repeatedly targeting individuals involved in the fight against terrorism," and "insulting a public official due to their duty." The court sentenced Karabay to 4 years and 3 months in prison and ordered his release. During this period, Karabay had remained in prison for 201 days.
