Journalist Furkan Karabay sent a written statement from Marmara Prison in Silivri on the occasion of the May 19 Commemoration of Atatürk, Youth and Sports Day.
Karabay, who is being held under arrest on charges of "insulting the President" and "targeting those involved in the fight against terrorism," drew attention to both the youth and the justice system in his message.
"THEY ARE SPENDING THIS SACRED DAY BEHIND IRON BARS"
Emphasizing the meaning and significance of May 19 in his message, Karabay stated, "On the anniversary of the struggle for independence that Mustafa Kemal Atatürk initiated by landing in Samsun 106 years ago, today at least 45 university students are spending this sacred day, which their Ancestor gifted to them, behind iron bars because they exercised their constitutional rights."
"I AM VERY AT PEACE, I AM IN THE SAME WARD AS THE YOUTH"
Karabay, whose social media account was also restricted following his arrest, included the following in his message: "I am very well, I am very at peace. I am in the same ward as the young friends who were arrested during the Saraçhane protests. I believe that justice must be served as soon as possible, first for them, and then for me and all political prisoners."
