Journalist who reported 'AKP deputy's son went to school with a gun' arrested: Statement from Chief Public Prosecutor's Office

In a statement regarding the incident, the Aydın Chief Public Prosecutor's Office stated that the allegations did not reflect the truth.

According to the report by Yelis Ayaz, owner of the Aydınpost news website, some students attending the same school filed a complaint with CİMER claiming that Sarıbaş's son had come to school with a gun and a knife. The students also alleged that the situation had been reported to the school principal.

After Yelis Ayaz wrote about the alleged incident in her column, the matter was taken to the judiciary by Sarıbaş, and the prosecutor's office claimed that the incident did not take place.

JOURNALIST YELIS AYAZ ARRESTED

Ayaz, who was detained by police teams in the morning, was referred to the courthouse after her procedures at the police station.

Following the prosecutor's office procedures, journalist Yelis Ayaz was brought before the court and it was decided to arrest her on charges of 'publicly disseminating misleading information'.

STATEMENT FROM THE CHIEF PUBLIC PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE

The following statements were used in the statement made by the Aydın Chief Public Prosecutor's Office:

“Following the publication of news in some media outlets such as “deputy's son raided school with a gun” and “allegation that the deputy's son raided the school with a gun in Aydın has entered CİMER records” and similar reports, our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office felt the need to issue a press release. Within the scope of the investigation initiated by our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, taking into account the sensitivity formed in society after the tragic events that occurred recently in secondary education institutions in Kahramanmaraş province and the Siverek district of Şanlıurfa province, it has been understood that the news reports in the press do not reflect the truth and that such an incident did not occur.”

“An investigation has been launched against the suspects who caused anxiety, fear, and panic among the public by making false news that constitutes misleading information with no basis, taking advantage of the sensitivity formed in society after the tragic events that occurred in secondary education institutions in two different cities of our country, for the crime of publicly disseminating misleading information regulated in Article 217/A of the Turkish Penal Code,” the statement continued as follows:

“Regarding the research conducted on the allegations in the news content subject to the investigation that a deputy's son brought a gun to school and took photos with a gun inside the school, and that there were CİMER applications stating that this situation was known by the school administration but no action was taken; it has been understood that the CİMER applications were made to save the suspects from the crime after the investigation initiated against the suspects under Article 217/A of the TPC, that a disciplinary investigation was conducted by the school administration regarding an incident in 2024 where some students at a private school operating in Aydın province took photos with a toy gun they brought to school, that a five-day suspension penalty was given to the student who brought the toy gun to school, that the photo added to the CİMER application was the photo subject to this disciplinary investigation, that the parent of this student was not a public official or a deputy, and that this incident was distorted and taken out of context in an attempt to provide a basis for false news.”
