Judicial package expanding: Claims that 'influence agent' regulation will return to the agenda

The Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) will begin its new legislative work as of October 1. Important issues, primarily a new constitution, are on the Parliament's agenda. Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş is expected to make another call to the parties with groups in Parliament regarding the drafting of a new constitution before the term begins.

IMPORTANT LAWS AWAIT

Preparations have also begun for the legislative work to be addressed in the General Assembly. The proposal for amendments to the Law on the Protection of Consumers, the proposal for amendments to the Teaching Profession Law, and the proposal known in the public as the 9th Judicial Package are waiting to be discussed on the Parliament's agenda.

WITHDRAWN 'INFLUENCE AGENT' REGULATION MAY RETURN

According to a report by Gazete Duvar, the first proposal expected to be addressed in Parliament will be the Judicial package. However, it is stated that the proposal, from which some controversial regulations were removed due to the summer recess, will be expanded with the new legislative term. It is noted that the "influence agent" regulation, which came to the agenda while the package was being prepared but was withdrawn following criticism, will be added back.

The influence agent regulation is addressed in Article 22 of the 9th Judicial Package under the heading "Other activities." This article enters the "Crimes Against State Secrets and Espionage" section of the Turkish Penal Code as a new definition of crime under "Article 339/A." The regulation was withdrawn after press professional organizations and legal experts opposed this article.
