July 15 claim from the İsmailağa Community against Cübbeli Ahmet! 'On the night of the coup, he called someone and said about Erdoğan...'

The İsmailağa Community hosted journalists at the İsmailağa Mosque in Fatih.

During the meeting, a striking allegation was made regarding Ahmet Mahmut Ünlü, who was expelled from the community and is known to the public as Cübbeli Ahmet.

Independent Türkçe Editor-in-Chief Nevzat Çiçek, who was present at the meeting, conveyed the remarks about Cübbeli Ahmet as follows: “They claim that Cübbeli Ahmet Hoca called someone from the phone of a person next to him on the night of July 15 and said regarding Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, ‘Congratulations, this is the only way he could be sent off,’ and that they have reported this to the relevant authorities.”

Nevzat Çiçek reported the following from the meeting in question:

“They emphasize that Cübbeli Ahmet Hoca was never in any decision-making body of the community and was not part of the 8-person advisory board formed by Mahmut Efendi; they state that he was only given a place on the commentary board by Mahmut Efendi, saying, ‘He never represented the community. He had no such duty, and no such duty was ever given to him.’”

They claim that their silence regarding Cübbeli Ahmet Hoca until today stemmed from an understanding of ‘let us not break anyone’s heart,’ and that friends were constantly sent to warn him, but that Cübbeli Ahmet Hoca did not keep any of the promises he made.

They state that they are very uncomfortable with the names FETÖ and İsmailağa being mentioned side-by-side by Cübbeli Ahmet and others, that they view the matter from a faith-based perspective beyond politics, and that they interpret many processes, especially the Çavuşbaşı process, as attempts by FETÖ to carry out operations on the community in the past.”

According to Çiçek, the following was also discussed at the meeting regarding the July 15 coup attempt:

“They state that during the July 15 coup attempt, they called on all their members to take to the streets and that they were among the first groups to do so. They say that after the July 15 coup attempt, some people in the team that took Mahmut Efendi to Çavuşbaşı were issued travel bans due to the FETÖ issue. They claim that Cübbeli Ahmet Hoca called someone from the phone of a person next to him on the night of July 15 and said regarding Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, ‘Congratulations, this is the only way he could be sent off,’ and that they have reported this to the relevant authorities. They allege that Cübbeli Ahmet is working to destroy the community and has been tasked with this. They say that Cübbeli Ahmet does what some people tell him to do due to his fears of prison and the like. They state that they are constantly being worn down by the relationship and statements between Cübbeli Ahmet and Doğu Perinçek, and that they have been forced to make a statement.”
