Justice Minister Gürlek responds to perceptions about the judiciary: 'It looks at the evidence'

Stating that citizens have two main criticisms regarding justice, namely "trust in the judiciary" and "the length of trials," Gürlek said, "One of these is, unfortunately, the perception that 'the judiciary is always on the side of the powerful.' This is a false perception. Judges and prosecutors look at the evidence in the file. Whether that person is powerful or in an important position is not important. I expect my colleagues to show the utmost care in this regard as well."

Addressing the main criticisms from citizens, Minister Gürlek noted the following regarding the problem of trust in the judiciary:

"There are two main criticisms from citizens regarding justice. One of these is, unfortunately, the perception that 'the judiciary is always on the side of the powerful.' This is a false perception. Judges and prosecutors look at the evidence in the file. Whether that person is powerful or in an important position is not important. I expect my colleagues to show the utmost care in this regard as well."

Stating that the length of trials is another main subject of criticism, Gürlek indicated that they are in constant consultation with their colleagues within the scope of the 12th Judicial Package. Minister Gürlek said, "We are working to ensure that the problems you encounter in practice do not cause delays in trials. With the 12th Judicial Package, we will take steps regarding the reinforcement of judges and prosecutors and the improvement of working conditions."

Reminding that he served on the bench for 20 years, Minister Gürlek emphasized that he attaches importance to courthouse visits in order to make observations in the field personally. Minister Gürlek stated, "I have served as a judge and prosecutor; therefore, I know your problems and your psychology very well. We are in the field to provide morale to our colleagues and to produce solutions to problems on-site."
