Justice Minister Gürlek's statement on 'Attorneyship Law' regulation: We have started immediately

Justice Minister Akın Gürlek, in his speech at an iftar program organized by the Ankara Bar Association No. 2 at ATO Congresium, wished for the month of Ramadan to bring blessings to Turkey and the Islamic world.

Stating that the prosecutor represents the claim, the judge the decision, and the lawyer the defense, Gürlek expressed that if one of these three elements is weak, justice will remain incomplete.

Gürlek reminded that the Attorneyship Law defines the lawyer as a founding element of the judiciary, and emphasized that the Turkish Penal Code counts the lawyer among those performing judicial duties, noting that lawyers are the guarantors of the rule of law.

Expressing that lawyers play a huge role in the successes achieved, especially in areas such as mediation and conciliation, Gürlek continued as follows:

"In recent years, we have taken important steps to strengthen the legal profession. We introduced the Entrance Exam for Legal Professions. We made regulations to increase quality in law faculties. By implementing the e-hearing system, we enabled lawyers to participate in trials from where they are. We expanded UYAP integration, put the 'celse' (session) application into effect, and reduced the VAT rate on some legal services. We introduced bar association fee exemptions and financing support opportunities for lawyers starting their careers. We increased legal aid revenues. These are regulations that have been implemented by listening to the voice of the defense."

Gürlek stated that strengthening the legal profession is possible not only with individual regulations but with a holistic approach.

Explaining that they have started working immediately to address the Attorneyship Law in a more comprehensive manner for this purpose, Gürlek said:

"As one of the main goals of strengthening the defense in the Judicial Reform Strategy document, we will update the Attorneyship Law in the coming period, and we will make regulations that will expand the lawyers' powers of unity, solidarity, and document procurement, and provide support to trainee lawyers. Our goal is to prepare an environment where lawyers can practice their profession with confidence, dignity, and effectiveness. Strengthening the defense means strengthening the judiciary. Strengthening the judiciary means strengthening justice. Justice comes to life as a whole with the judge's verdict, the prosecutor's claim, and the lawyer's defense. On this occasion, I would like to thank all our lawyers who work for the manifestation of justice, and I wish for the month of Ramadan to be a source of blessings."
