Justice Minister Tunç announces investigation into claims that a student's application was rejected due to her headscarf
Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç announced that the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office has launched an investigation into allegations that the application of Dilara Çiçek, a dentistry student who wanted to volunteer at the World Dental Congress to be held in Istanbul, was rejected because she wears a headscarf.
In a post on his social media account, Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç stated, "An investigation has been launched by the Istanbul Anatolian Chief Public Prosecutor's Office in accordance with Article 122 of the Turkish Penal Code (TCK), which regulates the crime of 'Hate and discrimination,' regarding the allegations that the application of dentistry student Dilara Çiçek, who wanted to volunteer at the World Dental Congress to be held in Istanbul, was rejected on the grounds that she wears a headscarf."
Stating that usurping women's freedom of belief, education, and work is a "February 28 mentality," Minister Tunç noted that this mentality belongs to the old Turkey and said, "According to our Constitution, everyone has the freedom of conscience, religious belief, and conviction.
No one can be condemned or accused because of their religious beliefs and convictions.
This discriminatory approach, which does not fit with freedom of religion and conscience in our country where we have paved the way for fundamental rights and freedoms, can never be accepted.
The investigation is being carried out meticulously."
