Karşıyaka Mayor Yıldız Ünsal announces she has been threatened: 'I will not allow these bullies'

Karşıyaka Mayor Yıldız Ünsal announced that both her own team and Kent A.Ş. executives and their families have been threatened due to the 'Textile Days' project they aimed to carry out at the Bostanlı Marketplace.

FOOTAGE FROM THE MARKETPLACE SHOWN AT THE MUNICIPAL COUNCIL

During the opening session of the Karşıyaka Municipal Council, footage regarding the incidents that took place at the Bostanlı Marketplace, which was closed on Wednesday for electrical renovations, was shared in the council chamber. Security camera recordings captured the moments when approximately 50 market vendors breached barricades and wire fences, damaged public property, and forced their way inside with their vehicles.

Speaking about the events, Karşıyaka Mayor Yıldız Ünsal stated that they have imposed administrative fines on all individuals involved in the incidents and have filed a criminal complaint with the prosecutor's office.

“I WILL NOT ALLOW THESE BULLIES”

Stating that there is a serious rent-seeking system at the marketplace, Ünsal said:

"We have seen that there is a rent-seeking system here. Stalls have been sold. Stalls have been sold for up to 12 million liras. People who want to open a stall at the market were paying 15 thousand liras weekly to certain individuals... If there is to be a change of stalls here, the only authorized body is the Municipal Committee; there is no other authority. From now on, stalls not opened under their own name will be canceled. There is a rent-seeking system, and while I don't know what that rent is, I think a measure will be taken against it. I am calling all units to duty. As a female mayor, I will not allow these bullies. Likewise, I want our District Governor and our Police Department to do their jobs."

“THEY EVEN THREATENED THEIR FAMILIES”

Ünsal tearfully recounted that individuals even went to the home of a Kent A.Ş. executive and threatened their family.

"An incident occurred that saddened me deeply. I will not name them, but they went to the homes of the executives and threatened them with their children. As mayor, I do not have the luxury of putting anyone in danger. I will not do that," said Ünsal, announcing that they have decided to carry out the project in another area for this reason. She also emphasized that all steps will be taken against the rent-seeking system at the marketplace.

“I WILL TAKE ALL NECESSARY MEASURES”

Mayor Ünsal concluded her remarks as follows:

"We will hold a meeting with our group. I apologize for gathering you here. I shed many tears last night. I cannot tell you what was done to our friends. As a mayor, I have no right to do this to our friends. But from now on, what rent is, and what it means not to be able to get rent from rent-seeking... I will take all necessary measures."
