Making a statement on his social media account regarding the 1980 military coup, Kılıçdaroğlu used the following expressions:
"They thought they had won, saying, 'Our boys have succeeded.'
But the children of our country walked to the gallows; subsequent generations, however, grew their faith and their struggle for the homeland, and stood up for the Republic and democracy.
We have carried all the pains of the 1980 military coup in our hearts. However, we made peace by loving one another as right-wingers and left-wingers.
I wholeheartedly share the pain of everyone who carries the sorrow of the September 12, 1980 coup, and I wish God's mercy upon those who have passed away."
