Koca, who said 'My heart is not in favor of euthanasia,' makes a contradictory statement
Minister of Health Fahrettin Koca had made notable remarks in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) regarding stray animals. While his words 'My heart is not in favor of euthanasia' were still being debated, Koca made a new statement.
Speaking on the rise in rabies cases, Minister Koca had said, "It is clear from the increase in rabies cases that a measure must be taken. So, should the measure be euthanasia? Frankly, my heart is not in favor of euthanasia as a human being." These statements by Koca had been criticized by some segments of society.
In a new post on his social media account, Koca this time addressed those calling for euthanasia, stating, "What is necessary and what our hearts desire may sometimes not align with each other."
Minister Koca stated that the purpose of the measures to be taken against stray dogs, which lead to an increase in rabies cases and many other serious problems as well as causing trauma, is to ensure that they do not harm a single child or a single person.
"WHAT IS NECESSARY AND WHAT OUR HEARTS DESIRE MAY NOT ALIGN"
Stating that life outside must be safe, Koca continued his words as follows:
"What my heart desires is for them to be granted the right to life, provided that these conditions are met. The existing law already indicates under which conditions euthanasia can be resorted to regarding stray dogs.
Our absolute priority regarding human health does not allow for any objection to the measures to be taken. The necessity of taking measures against stray dogs cannot be ignored.
We all desire that the path and method to be resorted to against the growing problem be scientifically defined and civilized. We must be in search of granting a living creature the right to life, provided that appropriate conditions are created.
What is necessary and what our hearts desire may sometimes not align with each other. This is also a reality."
