Kurtulmuş's first assessment of the 'February 27' statement from İmralı: The process is under the control of politics

Regarding the work of the National Solidarity, Brotherhood and Democracy Commission and the stage the process has reached, Kurtulmuş said, "Fortifying Turkey's inner fortress, which our President brought to the agenda with his Malazgirt speech and subsequently during the opening period of the Parliament, has become the most important issue of Turkish politics. On the other hand, with the statements of Mr. Bahçeli, Turkey has taken important steps. On this day last year, İmralı made a statement declaring that it would lay down arms and dissolve the organization. In his statement, he expressed the ideas that the ideological structure had collapsed and that the era of armed struggle in Turkey was behind us. Almost all political parties supported the process to move forward. As a responsibility of politics, a commission was established under the roof of the TBMM. It held its first meeting on August 5. It prepared its final report through very productive discussions. The late Demirel, Özal, İnönü, and Erbakan Hoca had taken some steps to resolve this issue, but the opportunities did not arise due to the conditions of the period," he said.

Evaluating the report accepted by the commission, Kurtulmuş said, "It is a report that reveals that none of the concerns that exist in some segments of our society are valid. The parties have their own views. All of them were added to the commission report. I believe that the requirements of this report will hopefully be fulfilled and that it is necessary for Turkey to complete this now," he said.

Referring to the message sent by PKK leader Abdullah Öcalan on the first anniversary of his February 27 call, Kurtulmuş said, "The statement made from İmralı today is important. It should be expected that all components of the organization will comply with the decision announced here. One of the common points of the report is the dissolution of the organization and the making of necessary legal arrangements along with the laying down of arms. From now on, the dissolution of all elements of the organization and the laying down of arms will be ensured. Then Turkey will take the necessary steps and will not pay the costs of this heavy bill. The process is entirely under the control of politics.

"Developments in Syria have positively affected the process"

Kurtulmuş continued his words as follows: 

"Nothing that would disturb the souls of our martyrs, unsettle our veterans, or that they would not approve of has been brought to the agenda, and it will not be brought hereafter. Turkey will leave behind that dark period in which it spent 50 years, paid a bill of approximately 2.5 trillion dollars, lost tens of thousands of lives, and cities remained under pressure. As Turkey gets rid of terrorism and peace, brotherhood, and solidarity among us increase, its march in every field will accelerate much more."

Noting that the developments in Syria have positively affected the process, Kurtulmuş said, "I hope we will see that the threat of terrorism will disappear in all countries in our region; the preservation of Syria's territorial integrity, the termination of the presence of terrorist organizations, and the emergence and strengthening of a real state structure in Syria. The economic and political fortification of Syria."
