'La Nina' effect in Turkey: Temperatures are dropping

The Meteorological Service has shared the latest weather forecasts for Turkey. It was stated that temperatures will drop rapidly starting November 24, with harsh cold expected to be particularly effective in the inner and eastern parts of the country. Although air temperatures are still hovering above seasonal norms, it was emphasized that a serious change will occur in the coming days.

Today, the morning hours in the inner and eastern parts began with fog and mist. Air temperatures in these regions continue to hover above seasonal norms. However, experts predict a significant drop in temperatures starting November 24.

HOW DOES LA NINA AFFECT WEATHER CONDITIONS IN TURKEY?

Following the early snowfall seen in high-altitude areas in recent weeks, atmospheric instability has returned to the agenda. Meteorology expert Dr. Güven Özdemir stated that the cold weather expected at the end of November is anticipated to arrive 7-10 days earlier than usual. Özdemir expressed that fluctuations in jet streams have increased and the atmosphere has become more sensitive. This situation will also shape the character of the winter.

TEMPERATURES IN ISTANBUL TO DROP BY 18 DEGREES

Throughout the week in Istanbul, temperatures have been measured between 20-23 degrees due to the effect of the 'lodos' (southwesterly wind). However, as of November 24, these temperatures are expected to drop to 18°C. In the following days, temperatures in Istanbul may fall to 13°C. Nighttime temperatures are projected to drop to 8°C. This change will create a noticeable chilling effect in the city.

PRECIPITATION TO INTENSIFY ON NOVEMBER 27-28

Meteorology experts are drawing attention specifically to the dates of November 27-28. The probability of precipitation in the Marmara Region is expected to increase on these dates. The system coming from the west may intensify regional downpours. It is stated that sleet may be seen in the high-altitude parts of Central Anatolia.

LA NINA AND THE SNOW SCENARIO FOR THE 2025-2026 WINTER

Moderate La Nina signals have been observed in the Pacific since September. According to international analysis centers, the effects of La Nina on Turkey are expected to be felt indirectly. Dr. Özdemir stated that the probability of heavy snow in Istanbul in December is low, and the actual snow scenario will begin in the January-February period. Özdemir added that it will be difficult to see permanent snow cover in coastal areas.

WEATHER ACROSS THE COUNTRY TODAY

MARMARA

The Marmara Region will be partly to occasionally very cloudy. Short-term passing showers may be seen on the western coasts of Balıkesir. In Thrace, southerly winds will strengthen from time to time.

AEGEAN

Cloudiness will increase on the western coasts of the Aegean Region. Light passing showers are expected in the west of Muğla. Fog will be effective in the inner parts during the morning hours.

MEDITERRANEAN

The Mediterranean Region will generally experience partly to slightly cloudy weather. A dense cloud cover may be seen from time to time in the west of the region.

CENTRAL ANATOLIA

Most of Central Anatolia will be calm and slightly cloudy. However, fog will be effective in the morning hours. The weather is generally good in the surroundings of Ankara, Konya, Eskişehir, and Kayseri.

BLACK SEA

Partly cloudy weather generally prevails in the Black Sea Region. While the possibility of fog continues in the western parts, the Central and Eastern Black Sea will be clearer.

EASTERN ANATOLIA

Partly to slightly cloudy weather is expected in the Eastern Anatolia Region. There is a high probability of dense fog in some places during the morning hours.

SOUTHEASTERN ANATOLIA

In Southeastern Anatolia, calm and slightly cloudy weather will prevail in the surroundings of Diyarbakır, Gaziantep, Mardin, and Siirt.
