Landslide disaster in Trabzon: It narrowly missed a 5-story building
Efforts are underway to heal the wounds caused by the floods and landslides that occurred following the heavy rainfall that hit Trabzon the day before yesterday. Municipal and highway teams are continuing their work to prevent further destruction and material damage in areas where transportation has been disrupted across 4 districts. In the Yolüstü neighborhood, a building narrowly escaped the landslide, though the ground floor sustained damage.
Efforts are underway to erase the traces of the floods and landslides that occurred following the heavy rainfall that hit Trabzon the day before yesterday. These rains, which were effective in 4 districts, led to the closure of many neighborhood roads and caused citizens to suffer grievances. Municipal and highway teams are rapidly continuing their work to reduce the scale of the destruction.
A 5-story building in the Can Küme Houses in the Yolüstü neighborhood of the Arsin district sustained material damage after a massive landslide narrowly missed it. The landslide, which occurred with a loud noise following the excessive rainfall, caused serious damage to the ground floor of the building, while the surrounding roads were covered with soil and rock fragments.
Aziz Can, one of the building's residents, described the terror he experienced at that moment as follows:
“I was sitting at home in the evening hours. Suddenly, a landslide occurred. As you can see, it blocked our road. I took shelter in a neighbor's house. There were explosions in the apartment building; there is serious damage. It was as if an earthquake had happened; there was a loud noise. I couldn't enter my home; there is a lot of debris. It needs to be cleared as soon as possible. There are 5 households in the building.”
Yolüstü Neighborhood Headman Bayram Tiryaki evaluated the situation as follows:
“I was surprised when I saw the building. There is a major risk here. I was also held hostage by the rain; my vehicle was stuck in the middle of the flood. A young girl was also trapped under the soil. Because the roads were closed, neither AKUT nor the fire department could reach the scene. She was later pulled from the soil and taken to the hospital by ambulance. There is no open road; excavators and graders are working, but they are insufficient. Such grievances are being experienced in all neighborhoods. There was a flood two months ago as well; this is the second one. I am 50 years old, and for the first time in my life, I have seen two disasters, and they happened during my term as headman.”
Authorities state that they have taken action to bring the situation in the region under control and to accelerate the reconstruction process. However, the public expects preventive measures to be taken as soon as possible to ensure that such events do not recur.
