Lawyer for arrested journalist Furkan Karabay recounts the detention process

Gerçek Gündem editor Furkan Karabay was arrested on charges of "targeting a person involved in counter-terrorism" after reporting on the court minutes of the trial involving Barış Saral of the Sarallar criminal group.

Highlighting the events that occurred during the detention process before Furkan Karabay was arrested, his lawyer Enes Ermaner explained the legal irregularities in the process that led to Karabay's imprisonment 'simply for doing journalism' while appearing on the Adalet Günlüğü program.

"3 POLICE OFFICERS STOP HIM AND CHECK HIS ID"

Stating that Karabay was called out of his office by someone claiming to be from the 'Beyoğlu Police Department' and was stopped and detained by 3 police officers 100 meters away after leaving the office, Ermaner described what happened during the detention process:

"Someone called Furkan saying, 'We are calling from the Beyoğlu Police Department.' We don't know if they were actually calling from the Beyoğlu Police Department or if it was the police officers who came to pick him up. They said, 'You have a notification, come down,' and Furkan went down. After he left here, 100 meters away, 3 police officers surrounded him. They said, 'Give us your ID, let's see,' and supposedly checked his criminal record. They said, 'Oh, you have an arrest warrant,' and put him in the car.

In fact, Furkan was hesitant at first. He said, 'They showed their badges, but maybe they were completely different people, maybe the badges were fake. They took me and immediately put me in the car.'"

"POLICE OFFICER SAYS, 'WILL YOU HAND ME THE WEAPON?'"

"When they put Furkan in the car, there was a weapon on the seat next to him. The police officer in the front seat said, 'Okay, give me the weapon.' Furkan replied, 'Why should I give you the weapon? Why should my fingerprints be on this weapon? It's your own weapon, you take it.' After that, no one spoke to Furkan until they reached the Vatan Police Headquarters. When Furkan tried to turn on his phone after getting into the car, saying 'I want to inform my lawyers,' they took his phone, saying, 'No, there is also a seizure order for your phone.'"
