Lawyer for mother accused in Narin Güran murder case appeals to Court of Cassation: 'Due to being contrary to law'

Following the rejection of the appeal against the aggravated life sentence handed down by the court of first instance to mother Yüksel Güran for the crime of "intentional killing of a child in complicity" in the Narin Güran murder case in Diyarbakır, an application has been made to the Court of Cassation requesting the reversal of the decision.

In the appeal petition prepared by Yüksel Güran's lawyer, Yılmaz Demiroğlu, it was recalled that the Diyarbakır Regional Court of Justice 1st Criminal Chamber had examined and found the verdict to be in accordance with the law regarding the appeals against the sentences handed down at the 8th High Criminal Court's hearing on December 28, 2024, where the detained defendants, mother Yüksel, brother Enes, and uncle Salim Güran, were each sentenced to aggravated life imprisonment for "intentional killing of a child in complicity," and Nevzat Bahtiyar was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in prison for "destroying, concealing, or altering evidence of a crime."

FOUND TO BE IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LAW BY MAJORITY VOTE

The appeal petition, submitted to the 1st Criminal Chamber to be forwarded to the Court of Cassation, stated: "I respectfully request and demand that the conviction decision regarding my client and the ruling on the rejection of the appeal on its merits be reversed due to being contrary to procedure and law.

Due to the decision being contrary to law, procedure, and statute, I request that the appeal review be conducted with a hearing, that our appeal be accepted and the verdict be reversed, and that my client be released, taking into account the current state of evidence in the file, the manner in which the incident occurred, and the lack of evidence indicating strong suspicion of a crime regarding the defendant mother."

The Diyarbakır Regional Court of Justice 1st Criminal Chamber had found the prison sentences given by the court of first instance for the 4 defendants to be in accordance with the law by a majority vote. The 1st Criminal Chamber had decided to reject the appeals separately and to continue the detention of the defendants.
