Legal battle for 60,000 trees in Tokat
A hearing was held in the lawsuit filed to cancel the license for a mining project that would destroy 60,000 trees to extract bentonite clay, also used as 'cat litter,' in the town of Yazıcık in the Niksar district...
For the mining project, which includes even the village cemetery within its licensed area, three separate EIA areas have been designated on a total of 5,130,000 m2 of land. Water resources, forests, and pastures are under threat. According to the expert committee appointed for the case, the operating license is scientifically insufficient.
Taking the prepared expert report into account, the Tokat Administrative Court issued a stay of execution regarding the 10-year operating license granted for the bentonite mine on December 31, 2025.
Plaintiff Yazıcık Municipality Lawyer İsmail Hakkı Atal made the following statement regarding the case:
“While the price of tomatoes produced in Yazıcık is 150 TL per kilo, there is no rational reason to extract bentonite, which will be used for cat litter that costs 20 TL per kilo, in a town that is a natural wonder.”
