Letter from Can Atalay to Mahmoud Abbas: I would have liked to welcome you to Parliament
Can Atalay, whose parliamentary membership was revoked, sent a message to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, who is set to address the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. In his message, Atalay stated, "I would have liked to welcome you to Parliament, shake your hand, and personally convey our solidarity with the Palestinian people, as well as our respect and admiration for your struggle."
Can Atalay, who was elected as a deputy from Hatay but later had his parliamentary status revoked, sent a fax to Parliament Speaker Numan Kurtulmuş to be delivered to Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
Can Atalay stated, "We follow in the footsteps of those who stand on the side of the Palestinian people's just cause not only with words but with actions; we always carry the Palestinian cause in our minds and hearts, and we always keep it on our agenda."
'I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO WELCOME YOU TO PARLIAMENT'
In the text that Can Atalay sent to Kurtulmuş to be forwarded to Abbas, he included the following statements:
"I would have liked to welcome you to Parliament, shake your hand, and personally convey our solidarity with the Palestinian people, as well as our respect and admiration for your determination and struggle.
However, unfortunately, I cannot fulfill this duty because a duly elected deputy is being held in prison despite the clear provisions of our Constitution.
Our Grand National Assembly of Turkey is hosting you today so that our people can declare their strongest objection to this genocidal war to the entire world. I sincerely hope that our meeting will make a strong contribution to the international solidarity that stands against the genocide you are experiencing."
'WE ALWAYS CARRY THE PALESTINIAN CAUSE IN OUR MINDS AND HEARTS'
Mr. Abbas,
We follow in the footsteps of those who stand on the side of the Palestinian people's just cause not only with words but with actions; we always carry the Palestinian cause in our minds and hearts, and we always keep it on our agenda.
The Palestinian people's struggle for freedom and the sacrifices they have endured are a source of both strength and inspiration for those fighting for equality and freedom in Turkey, just as they are all over the world.
'TAKE OUR GREETINGS TO THE PALESTINIAN PEOPLE'
Today, one of the most severe genocidal wars in human history is being waged on your lands, in Gaza. The objection to this genocidal war, which the Netanyahu government is waging without recognizing any rules, is now rising all over the world. I hope that the rising international solidarity will add strength to the resistance of the Palestinian people. I believe that the freedom of Palestine will also be important in opening the doors to peace, equality, and freedom in the Middle East.
Take our greetings to the Palestinian people. Tell them once again how precious their commitment and persistence for their country and their freedom are, not only for us but for the peoples of the world."
