Levent Kırca foresaw the tragedy in İzmir years ago

On July 12, 2024, during a heavy downpour in the Konak district of İzmir, Özge Ceren Deniz stepped into a puddle on Enver Dündar Başar Street, was struck by an electric current, and fell to the ground. İnanç Öktemay, who tried to help her, was also struck by the current and fell beside his friend.

Öktemay and Deniz, who were pulled from the puddle by bystanders, could not be saved despite medical intervention at the Tepecik Training and Research Hospital and Alsancak State Hospital, where they were taken.

As part of the investigation, excavations were carried out in the area for examination. In a statement, the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality argued that during the construction of 3 rainwater grates commissioned by the İZSU General Directorate to a contractor in January 2024, an observer was requested from Gdz Elektrik, and the work was carried out under the supervision of an observer.

The statement also alleged that Gdz Elektrik had performed maintenance and repair work on electrical lines next to the rainwater grate, that the electrical lines were laid 23 centimeters below the ground in violation of construction techniques, and that citizens had filed 2 fault reports with Gdz Elektrik for the mentioned area.

Regarding the investigation into the deaths of 2 people who were electrocuted during the rainfall in Konak, İzmir, Minister of Justice Yılmaz Tunç announced that detention orders had been issued for 29 people. The İzmir Metropolitan Municipality and the electricity distribution company Gdz Elektrik blamed each other.
