Livestock market closed! Quarantine begins due to 'bluetongue' disease

The Kadirli District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry announced that bluetongue disease, which is spreading in Europe and can be fatal in sheep, goats, and cattle, has been detected in the district following checks by veterinarians and laboratory test results.

In a statement from the District Directorate of Agriculture and Forestry, it was stated: "As a precautionary measure, the purchase, sale, and transport of cattle and small ruminants have been suspended until further notice in the villages of Harkaçtığı, Yusufizzettin, Şabaplı, İlbistanlı, Kösepınarı, Karakütük, Koçlu, Yoğunoluk, Değirmendere, and Tahta, as well as at the Kadirli Livestock Market. Bluetongue disease is not a zoonotic disease that transmits from animals to humans."

The Kadirli Municipality Police Department announced the necessary operational periods and that the livestock market has been closed until further notice.

WHAT IS BLUETONGUE DISEASE?

Known by this name because it turns the tongues of infected animals blue, the disease is caused by a species of midge.

The disease can cause high fever, loss of appetite, joint pain, cessation of milk production, miscarriage, and respiratory problems in animals.
