Mahfi Eğilmez shows that the economy has even changed 'idioms'
Economist Mahfi Eğilmez demonstrated through a social media post that the national economy has even altered the meanings of common idioms.
While citizens struggle with intense economic hardships, they are fighting a battle for survival in the face of price hikes that arrive almost every day.
Economist Mahfi Eğilmez pointed out through his social media post that the increasing economic difficulties have even changed the meanings of idioms.
Here is that post by Eğilmez regarding the new meaning acquired by the idiom 'ayvayı yedik' (we've eaten the quince):
"Today, I bought one quince from the market for 35 liras.
When I was a child, they would say "ayvayı yedik" when something bad happened.
The idiom 'eating the quince' meant 'to fall into a bad situation, for things to go wrong.'
I think today, eating the quince must mean having reached a good situation."
