Mahir Polat, who was placed under house arrest, has been released: Polat makes a statement referencing 'conscience'
Mahir Polat, who was referred to the Council of Forensic Medicine due to health issues and subsequently placed under house arrest following the report received, was released in the evening after procedures at the prison were completed. Mahir Polat's first statement included a reference to 'conscience'.
It was learned that Polat, who was arrested and taken to Silivri Prison, suffers from hypertension.
His lawyers had frequently called for his release, stating that it was not possible for him to remain in prison due to his poor health. In the latest development, Mahir Polat was referred to the Council of Forensic Medicine.
While all eyes were on the report to come from the Council of Forensic Medicine, a decision for house arrest was issued for Mahir Polat.
Polat's lawyer, Erkam Erdem, said in his first statement, "We have confirmed the information that Mahir Polat has been released with a judicial control measure requiring him not to leave his residence. However, we have not yet seen the decision."
Erdem shared the information that, "Our friends are going to Silivri to meet him."
After his procedures were completed, Mahir Polat was released from the Marmara Penal Execution Institution in Silivri. Mahir Polat's first words were, "I love everyone very much. The conscience of this country is not dead, thank you."
FIRST REACTIONS FROM CHP: 'THE LAW WILL BE NEEDED BY EVERYONE ONE DAY'
Following the decision, a series of posts came from CHP figures.
CHP Şanlıurfa Deputy Mahmut Tanal stated, "The decision to release Mahir Polat is gratifying. If our democratic reaction played a part in this decision, then we should all be happy. Get well soon! I hope that in this country, where even a shred of law is hard to find, fair decisions based on the rule of law and universal legal principles will be made for our students, our youth, and Mr. Ekrem İmamoğlu as well. We want legal security for everyone. The law will be needed by everyone one day!"
'EVEN IF IT IS LATE...'
Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş also shared the following after the decision:
"In our legal system, where detention pending trial is the exception, I consider the house arrest decision for Mahir Polat, taking his health condition into account, to be a step in the right direction, albeit late. I convey my best wishes for a speedy recovery to our Historical Cities Association Secretary General Mr. Mahir Polat and hope he regains his health as soon as possible. With the hope of a Turkey where justice, human rights, and conscience prevail..."
CHP Group Deputy Chairman Ali Mahir Başarır also expressed, "Shame on those who have brought us to a point where we are happy about an innocent person being placed under house arrest... Dear Mahir Polat, I wish you a speedy recovery. The days when justice returns to this country, when we reunite with all our comrades who are imprisoned, and when we dispel the darkness together are very close. Everything will be very beautiful!"
RELEASED: 'THE CONSCIENCE OF THIS COUNTRY IS NOT GONE'
Having completed his official procedures, Mahir Polat was released from the Marmara Prison in Silivri. In his first statement after leaving the prison, Mahir Polat said, "I need to rest, I am very tired. I love everyone very much. I know that the conscience of this country is not gone. I love the people of these lands from the bottom of my heart, thank you."
WHAT HAD HAPPENED?
In a post on February 21, Mahir Polat announced that he had undergone an angiography for the third time in four years. Stating that six stents had been placed in his heart as a result of the three procedures, Polat noted that he had to monitor blockages in two of his vessels.
Lawyer Erkam Erdem had stated that Mahir Polat had two conditions that were significant regarding his prison conditions; these were hypertension and blockages in his coronary arteries.
Mahir Polat had previously fallen ill in prison due to high blood pressure. According to his lawyer's statement, he was first taken to the infirmary and then transferred to the hospital located within the prison. On March 29, Polat was taken by ambulance from the Marmara Closed Penal Execution Institution, where he was being held, to the Mehmet Akif Ersoy Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery Training and Research Hospital.
Following his check-ups, Polat was kept under observation in the Cardiology Intensive Care Unit of the hospital and underwent an angiography procedure. After his treatment was completed, Polat was discharged on March 31 and sent back to the penal institution.
On April 4, Mahir Polat appeared before a board at the hospital within the Marmara Closed Penal Execution Institution campus to determine whether he was fit to remain in prison. It was decided that Polat should be referred to the Council of Forensic Medicine.
Mahir Polat was referred to the Council of Forensic Medicine on April 7. After his examination was completed, Polat was sent back to prison, and his lawyer Erkam Erdem stated, "In our meeting with him, he expressed that the transfer process went smoothly, handcuffs were not used in most places, and the prison officers and gendarmerie treated him very kindly, for which he was grateful. He also expressed that seeing the fair attitude of the doctors who performed the examination at the institution increased his faith in the justice of the decision they would make. At this stage, we are waiting for the institution to prepare a final report without further delay and for the necessary actions to be taken."
While all eyes were on the report to come from the Council of Forensic Medicine, Mahir Polat was transferred to the hospital once again yesterday.
