Mandatory winter tire requirement ends on April 1!

The Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure determines the mandatory winter tire application annually based on weather and climate conditions, in accordance with the Highway Traffic Law. This authority can also be delegated to governorates.

Winter tire inspections are carried out by Ministry officials, the General Directorate of Security, the Gendarmerie General Command, Ministry of Trade border gate units, and municipalities. Administrative fines are issued to drivers who do not comply with the rule.

The mandatory winter tire requirement, which began on November 25, 2023, in Istanbul and on December 1, 2023, across Turkey, ends on Monday, April 1, 2024.

Winter tires are designed to offer optimum performance at temperatures below 7 degrees Celsius. When used in summer months, they lose their properties, leading to issues such as wear and performance loss. Risks such as reduced road grip and control, as well as increased fuel consumption, occur.

Using tires appropriate for the season contributes to environmental sustainability by ensuring lower carbon emissions.

TIRE PRICES

Summer tires in the 205/55 R16 size, which are the most commonly used in Turkey, start at 1500 liras. The cost of changing 4 tires on cars varies between 500-1000 liras depending on the size.

STORING REMOVED TIRES

It is important to store tires removed during seasonal changes under the right conditions. The storage fee for 6 months in tire hotels, which are common in Turkey, varies between 500-1000 liras.
