Mansur Yavaş's assessment of Rıza Akpolat: He recalled the Yunus Emre Foundation...

Beşiktaş Mayor Rıza Akpolat has been arrested and sent to prison. Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (ABB) Mayor Mansur Yavaş, who made assessments regarding Akpolat's arrest, stated, "No public official can say they will not be tried if they are guilty. But the right to a fair trial is everyone's right." 

Yavaş said the following: 

"We find it wrong that he was taken from his home in the middle of the night in a way that discredits him. Everyone is equal before the law. We have learned that the firm in question has also done business with many other public institutions. If there is a problem with this firm, I believe this investigation should be conducted in conjunction with all public institutions. But it is wrong to do this only regarding the Beşiktaş Municipality. Everyone is equal before the law. While nothing is done to some of those who tweet on social media today, others are taken from their homes in the middle of the night. No public official can say they will not be tried if they are guilty. But the right to a fair trial is everyone's right. I would like to remind you of a universal rule of law; everyone is innocent until their conviction is finalized. This is valid all over the world. It must also be valid for us. A universal rule of law is the presumption of innocence. But if you are rushing to bring them in the middle of the night instead of inviting them to give a statement, you are sending a message to the public in advance. In our legal system, being tried without arrest is also the principle. If evidence will not be tampered with and there is no suspicion of flight."

'IT IS UNDERSTOOD THAT THERE ARE POLITICAL ASSESSMENTS'

In his speech, Mansur Yavaş continued by recalling the corruption at the Yunus Emre Foundation that has recently come to light. Yavaş said the following: 

"In recent days, we have seen something like this; there is talk of billions of dollars in corruption at the Yunus Emre Foundation. I mean, I don't know if anyone has been arrested, but the person alleged to be responsible is being made an ambassador. When you compare the treatment of two different people, it is understood that, unfortunately, there are political assessments involved. I don't know how much the political institution will be affected by this, but what saddens me the most is that it is clear the judiciary is being affected by this."
