The escalating clashes and attacks on civilians in the Syrian city of Latakia are a major source of concern. We do not accept the targeting of civilians in the region, especially minority communities; we call on the international community not to remain indifferent to this humanitarian crisis.

A humanitarian tragedy is unfolding in Latakia. Urgent action must be taken to prevent civilian casualties and ensure that the people of Latakia can live in safety on their own land. Turkey must conduct more effective diplomacy to prevent this tragedy from deepening and should strive to stop the clashes by acting in cooperation with the international community.

Stability must be established in the region to prevent developments that could lead to a new wave of refugees from Syria to Turkey. As one of the countries that has borne the heaviest economic and humanitarian burden of the Syrian war for years, we cannot simply watch this crisis. We must show that we stand in solidarity with all peoples in Syria and lead the way in taking concrete and effective steps to ensure the protection of civilians.

Turkey must take swift initiatives to ensure the safety of life and property of the people of Latakia by acting together with the international community to prevent the humanitarian crisis in the region from growing. It is our collective responsibility to prevent this tragedy in Syria from turning into a greater catastrophe.
