Mansur Yavaş makes striking remarks on the anniversary of the İliç mining disaster: 'It must not remain on paper'

Nine workers lost their lives after a landslide caused a pile of soil stored following a cyanide leaching process to collapse at the Çöpler gold mine in İliç.

Although a year has passed, no clear steps have been taken to punish those responsible, and opposition parties, in particular, continue to share reactions regarding the ongoing process.

CHP Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş also made a striking statement regarding the mining disaster, which has now reached its one-year mark.

Emphasizing the dire consequences caused by a lack of oversight, Yavaş stated, "occupational safety measures must not remain on paper."

On the 1st anniversary of the mining disaster in Erzincan's İliç, I remember our 9 fellow workers who lost their lives with mercy.

This tragedy has shown us what negligence and a lack of oversight can cost. Human life should not be put at risk in plain sight, and occupational safety measures must not remain on paper.

To ensure such tragedies are never experienced again, stricter inspections and effective measures must be taken regarding occupational safety. We will not forget those we have lost.
