'Marmara Earthquake' pits experts against each other: It cannot be this cheap

'Marmara Earthquake' pits experts against each other: It cannot be this cheap

Debates have reignited following a 3.9-magnitude earthquake that occurred off the coast of the Ayvacık district in Çanakkale.

Dr. Ramazan Demirtaş has reacted to the statements made by Prof. Dr. Naci Görür.

Criticizing Prof. Dr. Naci Görür's statement, "We expect the major earthquake on the northern branch soon," Dr. Ramazan Demirtaş responded with harsh words, noting that there is a distance of 280-300 kilometers between the two regions.

"NO CONNECTION CAN BE ESTABLISHED"

Dr. Ramazan Demirtaş stated that no direct connection can be established between the northern branch of the Marmara fault, which Görür pointed to in his statement, and the region where the 3.9-magnitude earthquake occurred.

"THERE ARE APPROXIMATELY 300 KILOMETERS BETWEEN THEM"

Stating that there is approximately 280-300 kilometers between the Kumburgaz-Adalar segment and the Skyros-Edremit basin, Demirtaş reacted strongly to the two regions being handled within the same assessment.

Demirtaş used the following expressions in his post:

WHAT IS THE CONNECTION?

There are 280-300 km between the Marmara northern branch Kumburgaz-Adalar segment (the segmentation is also not correct), where he says "we expect an earthquake" soon, and the Skyros-Edremit basin, where the 3.9 earthquake occurred. What is the connection? Absolutely none! Earthquake science has never suffered this much.

A TRAGICOMIC STATEMENT

"The Marmara Region is under stress. We expect the major earthquake on the northern branch soon." Who is "we"? What does "soon" mean? (How soon?) "What kind of connection did you establish between the 3.9 earthquake west of Lesbos and the northern branch 300 km away? A tragicomic statement.

EARTHQUAKE SCIENCE CANNOT BE THIS CHEAP!

Earthquake science cannot be this cheap! A small earthquake of ML=3.9 occurs on 15.07.2026 at 22:15 in the North Aegean, Skyros-Edremit Trough, 20 km WNW of Lesbos; 38 km SW of Ayvacık; 280-300 km SW of the northern branch, and an irrelevant statement saying "We expect an earthquake soon" becomes a trending topic.
