Mehmet Aslan deletes controversial post about Önder, makes a new statement: 'I had said this before'

Mehmet Aslan has deleted his controversial post made following the passing of Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and DEM Party Istanbul MP Sırrı Süreyya Önder. 

Making a second post, Aslan stated, "I had said this before: I do not speak ill of anyone, neither on their deathbed nor after they have passed away."

Deputy Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey and DEM Party Istanbul MP Sırrı Süreyya Önder passed away at the hospital where he was receiving treatment due to multiple organ failure.

The post made by İYİ Party Deputy Chairman Mehmet Aslan following Önder's passing drew significant backlash. In the post in question, Aslan had used the phrases, "May God forgive his sins, God took his life on the very day of Turkism."

DELETED HIS POST

Aslan deleted his message following the backlash it received. He then made a second statement to clarify his previous remarks.

Stating, "I had said this before: I do not speak ill of anyone, neither on their deathbed nor after they have passed away," Aslan added, "One says 'May God have mercy' or 'May God forgive his sins' after someone has passed away! That is what I said as well."

In the remainder of his statement, Aslan said, "I realized that my subsequent expression was harsh for a daughter who lost her father on the day of his death, for his family, and for good-hearted people who are sensitive, and I deleted the post because this situation did not suit me. One should not persist in a mistake! In the meantime, we will settle scores one by one with the lowlifes who, while claiming one should not speak ill of the dead, insulted and slandered our own deceased loved ones."
