Mehmet Emin Korkmaz, who targeted the mayor's attire, has been arrested! Statement from IYI Party

Mehmet Emin Korkmaz, who came to the agenda with a post he made on social media about Zeynep Güneş, the Mayor of the Mihalgazi district of Eskişehir, has been detained. After Korkmaz's post, in which he criticized the local government head's attire, was published on the X account named "MEKorkmazTR", the incident was referred to judicial authorities.

In the information provided by the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, it was stated that the post in question was evaluated within the scope of the charge of "inciting the public to hatred and hostility" and that an ex officio investigation was initiated.

Authorities announced that Korkmaz had been detained.

Mehmet Emin Korkmaz, who was caught as a result of the research and work carried out by the Eskişehir Provincial Police Department, was referred to the Duty Magistrate's Court with a request for his arrest for the crime of "Inciting the Public to Hatred and Hostility" following his interrogation at the Chief Public Prosecutor's Office. The court ordered the arrest of Mehmet Emin Korkmaz, and he was sent to a Closed Penal Execution Institution.

The Eskişehir Chief Public Prosecutor's Office included the following statements in its statement regarding the arrest of Mehmet Emin Korkmaz:

"On 07.02.2026, an ex officio investigation was initiated by our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office against the suspect for the crime of 'Inciting the Public to Hatred and Hostility' due to a post made against the Mayor of Mihalgazi by a social media user with the handle 'MEKorkmazTR' on the social media platform 'X'. The Eskişehir Provincial Police Department was instructed to apprehend and detain the suspect. As a result of the research and work carried out by the Eskişehir Provincial Police Department, it was determined that the account holder who made the post was M.E.K., and the suspect was detained. Our Chief Public Prosecutor's Office completed the interrogation of the suspect and referred him to the Duty Magistrate's Court with a request for his arrest within the scope of the crime of 'Inciting the Public to Hatred and Hostility', and he was arrested and delivered to a Closed Penal Execution Institution. Respectfully announced to the public."

IYI PARTY REFERRED HIM TO DISCIPLINARY BOARD

Korkmaz, who was learned to be an IYI Party member, was referred to the disciplinary board. IYI Party Secretary General Osman Ertürk Özel noted the following in a post he made on his social media account regarding the matter:

"Trying to humiliate people over their clothing choices is an indecency that only despicable people would commit.

Turkish women, who gained the right to vote and be elected together with Atatürk as a great republican achievement, can rule the world regardless of what clothing they choose. This is our view and our stance.

The person who used these insolent expressions has been referred to the disciplinary board with a request for permanent expulsion with precautionary measures.

We convey our heartfelt support to the esteemed Mihalgazi Mayor Zeynep Güneş regarding the indecency she was subjected to."
