Mesut Kocagöz released at first hearing following Antalya cable car disaster

Following the cable car accident that occurred on April 12 in the Konyaaltı district of Antalya, which resulted in 1 death, 7 injuries, and the rescue of 174 stranded people after 23 hours, 5 people were arrested, including the former Chairman of the Board of the cable car operator ANET and current Kepez Mayor Mesut Kocagöz.

The objection to Kocagöz's detention was rejected. Kocagöz's lawyers waited for the expert report to file another objection to the detention. After the expert report was added to the file, the indictment prepared by the prosecutor's office was sent to the Antalya 6th High Criminal Court.

In the 36-page indictment prepared by the Antalya Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, 150 people, including Memiş Gümüş who lost his life in the accident, were included as complainants. The same indictment named 12 people as suspects, including Kepez Mayor Mesut Kocagöz, ANET Deputy General Manager Ahmet Buğra Samsunlu, Okan Erol, and Serkan Yellice. The prosecution requested that the 12 suspects be punished for the crimes of 'endangering traffic safety by negligence' and 'causing death and injury by negligence.'

The indictment requested that Mesut Kocagöz, Ahmet Buğra Samsunlu, Edip Kemal Bahadır, Serdar Tezcan, Okan Erol, Serkan Yellice, and Suphi Kaplan be considered primarily at fault, and that Orhan Karaoğlan, Kazım Kılıç, Hüseyin Ay, Özgür Ermiş, and Aziz Azizoğlu be considered secondarily at fault. The prosecution requested sentences of up to 27 years for each of the suspects. The prepared indictment was accepted by the Antalya 6th High Criminal Court.

The first hearing held at the Antalya 6th High Criminal Court was attended by 12 defendants, including the detained Kepez Mayor Mesut Kocagöz, and the complainants. Security measures were taken due to the heavy crowd in the courthouse corridors. A crush occurred in front of and outside the courtroom door.

While the lawyers for the parties were present in the courtroom, the trial was observed by CHP Antalya Provincial Chairman Nail Kamacı, CHP Antalya deputies, CHP mayors, and numerous other individuals.
