Mesut Özil surpasses Erdoğan
Former footballer Mesut Özil, who is on the AKP's MKYK list, has become the only person to surpass AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan in the number of followers on social media accounts.
The 8th Ordinary Grand Congress of the AKP took place on Sunday, February 23. In the congress where AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan determined his A-Team, surprise names were included in the AKP MKYK.
One of these names was former footballer Mesut Özil. Having entered active politics after retiring from football in Turkey, Özil has surpassed President Erdoğan in the number of followers on his social media accounts.
According to Sözcü, Özil has a total of 91 million followers on his Facebook, X, and Instagram accounts. The total number of followers on President Erdoğan's three social media accounts is 42 million 680 thousand.

While playing for the German team Bremen, Mesut Özil, who chose the German National Team instead of the Turkish National Team in 2009, has now joined the MYK of the AKP, which he stated suits him. Özil had told German newspapers, "I chose Germany. I felt comfortable here, everything suits me." The Germans met this political decision by Özil with surprise, and his political preference made headlines everywhere.
