Meta's new step in the fight against online fraud
Meta has introduced new security measures utilizing facial recognition technology to help prevent scams and accelerate the recovery process for compromised accounts.
According to the company's statement, Meta, aware that scammers are constantly evolving their tactics to avoid detection, continues to develop new technologies by enhancing its existing defenses to ensure people are better protected against these threats and to make it harder for malicious actors to deceive users.
One of the major threats Meta is addressing is a fraud tactic where images of public figures are used in misleading advertisements to trick users. While many legitimate advertisements feature public figures, ads that impersonate them are often designed to look realistic, making them difficult to detect.
The company's ad reviews rely heavily on automated technology to examine the millions of ads published on their platforms every day.
Machine learning classifiers analyze various components of each ad, such as text, images, and video, to attempt to detect potential scams that may violate the company's advertising policies.
"DELETED REGARDLESS OF THE OUTCOME"
To support the process, Meta uses facial recognition technology to detect and block these ads by comparing the faces of public figures in suspicious content with their verified profile photos on Facebook and Instagram.
If a match confirms that the ad is a scam, the ad is blocked immediately, and all facial data used in the process is deleted, regardless of the outcome.
In many countries, including Turkey, public figures are automatically included in facial recognition protection, but they can opt out of this protection feature according to their preferences.
Meta has also introduced video verification as a new method for users to regain access to their Facebook or Instagram accounts.
When it is suspected that an account may have been compromised, users now have the option to verify their identity with a short video. This optional method offers an alternative to traditional document-based verifications.
COLLABORATION DETAIL
The features undergo Meta's comprehensive privacy and risk assessment processes and include security measures such as user education.
As the company continues its efforts to combat online fraud, it continues to collaborate with regulatory bodies and industry experts to ensure that facial recognition technology is implemented in a responsible and privacy-focused manner.
