'METABOLOM' experiment glossary published!

The Turkish Space Agency (TUA) has shared the latest installment of the "Experiment Glossary," which contains terms from the 13 experiments conducted by the country's first astronaut, Alper Gezeravcı, at the International Space Station (ISS).

The post made on TUA's social media account includes terms related to the "METABOLOM" experiment, which examines the negative effects on human health.

The statement included the following definitions:

Omics: The suffix "-ome" used in molecular biology refers to a total or a collection. These disciplines generally involve high data quantities and complexity, and usually require computer-aided analysis/interpretation.

Metabolomics: This refers to the detection, quantification, and identification of small-molecule metabolites—such as lipids, carbohydrates, vitamins, hormones, and other cellular components—emerging in tissues, cells, or physiological fluids at a specific time, using high-throughput technologies.

Transcriptomics: Also known as functional genomics. It covers the analysis of mRNAs, which are the products of regions that express themselves in DNA, the genetic material in cells. It is used to understand how information in the genome is processed in cells in terms of form, quantity, and timing, and its importance for the organism.

Bioinformatics: A scientific discipline that incorporates molecular biology with computer technology and associated data processing devices. In another definition, it is the science of compiling and analyzing complex biological data, and is generally defined as the use of information technologies in solving biological problems. It is known as the creation and operation of biological databases, and in its broadest definition, the use of all existing computer applications in solving biological problems.
