The General Directorate of Meteorology (MGM) has issued a warning for heavy downpours, storms, and dust transport in some regions across the country for Thursday, October 15. A yellow code alert was issued for 42 provinces, including Istanbul, and an orange code alert for 6 provinces.
The rainfall, which began in Istanbul on the morning of October 14 and continued intermittently throughout the day, intensified in the evening hours. Due to the heavy downpour, puddles formed on some streets and avenues in the city.
PROVINCES UNDER WARNING
According to the MGM's warning, the provinces given a yellow code are as follows: Adana, Ağrı, Ankara, Bingöl, Bolu, Çanakkale, Çorum, Edirne, Erzincan, Hakkari, Mersin, İzmir, Kayseri, Manisa, Mardin, Sinop, Tekirdağ, Van, Bayburt, Şırnak, Osmaniye, Adıyaman, Amasya, Balıkesir, Bitlis, Çankırı, Diyarbakır, Elazığ, Erzurum, Hatay, Istanbul, Kastamonu, Kırklareli, Malatya, Kahramanmaraş, Muş, Siirt, Sivas, Tunceli, Batman, Bartın, and Karabük.
The orange code warning was issued for Kocaeli, Sakarya, Yalova, Bursa, Zonguldak, and Düzce. According to the MGM's classification, a yellow warning indicates "less dangerous" weather, while an orange warning indicates "dangerous" weather conditions.

WHERE WILL THE RAIN AND WIND BE EFFECTIVE?
According to the latest forecasts, intermittent downpours and thunderstorms are expected across Turkey. The rainfall is expected to be locally heavy in the south and east of the Marmara region, the Western Mediterranean coasts, the Central and Eastern Mediterranean, the Western Black Sea, most of Eastern Anatolia, the east of Southeastern Anatolia, and the surroundings of Sivas, Gümüşhane, and Bayburt.
The rainfall is expected to be very heavy and severe in the Western Black Sea coasts and the surroundings of Istanbul, Bursa, Yalova, Kocaeli, Sakarya, Tunceli, Bingöl, the east of Malatya, the west of Elazığ, and Adıyaman. Attention was drawn to the possibility of extreme rainfall in the surroundings of Kocaeli, Sakarya, Düzce, and Zonguldak.

Air temperatures are expected to rise in Thrace, decrease in other regions, and generally remain below seasonal norms. The wind is expected to blow from northerly directions in the Marmara and North Aegean coasts, reaching storm force with speeds of 50-70 kilometers per hour.

It was reported that the wind could blow strongly at speeds of 40-60 kilometers per hour in the interior parts of the Eastern Black Sea and the southeast of Eastern Anatolia. It was noted that dust transport is expected in the southeast of Eastern Anatolia and Southeastern Anatolia, which may lead to a decrease in air quality and muddy rainfall.

The MGM urged citizens to be careful and take precautions against negative conditions such as floods, flash floods, overflows, and disruptions in transportation in regions where heavy rainfall is expected. The risks of roof detachment and tree toppling due to strong winds were also highlighted.

Minister of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change Murat Kurum also stated in a post on his social media account that damage assessment work has begun following the rainfall in Istanbul.
“Our General Directorate of Meteorology has a yellow code warning for 42 of our provinces, including Istanbul, and an orange code warning for 6 of our provinces (Bursa, Kocaeli, Sakarya, Yalova, Zonguldak, and Düzce) for tomorrow as well. Our relevant institutions are taking every necessary precaution.”
Kurum asked citizens to closely follow meteorological warnings and to be careful against risks.
